Hello Reader!

One of the great things which resulted from the 1st Rumble in the Jungle was our gaming group here banding together under a common identity, that of the CCWB, the “Clube Cuiabano of Wargames and Boardgames”.

It’s been five years since then and we’ve been gathering regularly to play board games and wargames at least once a week at a local gaming bar and on a few special occasions where we hold “gaming days” for club members and friends to attend. One such occasion has been “Carnajogos” held yearly at the Carnival holiday in Brazil (you can check pictures from previous years at the Facebook albums for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and a few pictures from 2020 as well),

So for this year’s edition of “Carnajogos” we decided to finally answer an old request of our members of organizing a 40K event for club members only, thus we held the 1st CARNAHAMMER.

With a total of 10 participants the 1st CARNAHAMMER had more players than the first edition of the Rumble in the Jungle tournament and over the course of 3 battle rounds played on the 22nd of February 2020, we fought fierce battles to find out who would be the 40K champion of Carnival.

I ended up playing the 1st CARNAHAMMER with the same Adeptus Custodes army I took to “Peleia 2020”, a tournament organized earlier in the year (on the 18th and 19th of January 2020) in the city of Porto Alegre by the members of the “Clube Gaucho de Wargames”.

At “Peleia 2020” I managed two win two games (barely) and lost miserably on another two, so I knew I was in for a rough ride as Adeptus Custodes are not the most competitive armies out there right now, but having recently read a nice article the other day about playing underdog armies in 40K and still having a blast, I embraced the idea of playing passionately and accepted the idea of not doing so well from the beginning, embodying the spirit of a true Custodian which is to prevail against the odds.

It turns out the plan worked!

I played my first game against Luis Carlos, an old friend of mine and my first and oldest 40K adversary (as we started the hobby together sometime back in 1999) still leading his infamous Black Legion after all these years.

I have always enjoyed playing against Luis, even if I always have a very hard time playing against him, because he also values a good gaming narrative. Still, seeing all those Black Legionaires arrayed against me, with Daemon Engines and even a Chaos Knight in tow, was a daunting prospect.

And still, against all odds, the Adeptus Custodes prevailed against the Black Legion, with MVP going to the Shield Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike serving as warlord for the army. Not only did he survive absurd punishment fighting a Chaos Knight for three turns, but also lived through the combined charge of the Chaos Knight, a unit of Raptors and Haarken Worldclaimer himself so that he could fall back from combat and with a well placed shot from his salvo launcher destroy the Chaos Knight.

My second game was played against my most recent padawan, Andre Mancini and his Imperial Guard. Another doomed battle as 18 Adpetus Custodes would face 116 models from the Imperial Guard (tanks included).

Once again the Custodes withstood a storm of fire from the Imperial Guard, but after 6 full turns of battle things looked grim for our boys in gold, however, Andre was to eager to dispatch my final Custodian Guard and after failing to bring him down with shooting attacks, he launched a full assault, providing me with two easy kills in the form of two company commanders that issued me the points I needed to pull a very hardly fough win.

So two victories landed me another tough match-up in the form of my friend Alaor. Alaor is the guy who back in 1994 introduced me to Role Playing Games (changing my life forever) so I repaid the favor introducing him to board gaming and wargaming, to the dismay of our fellow club mates.

FIghting Alaor’s Eldar was another tough prospect given that he outclassed my army in numbers, firepower, range and psychic powers. Having no alternative I launched a full assault on his forces leaving behind two units of Custodian Guards to try to earn at least a battle point per round. The game was heading towards a draw, but we had failed to add in my favor a bonus point awarded by the mission for controlling the two objectives I had placed on the battlefield, at the end of a turn in which I had pushed Alaor’s Eldar Rangers from an objective and controlled it with my Jetbikes.

Landing 3 victories and having more battle points than the second place I managed to win the 1st CARNAHAMMER!

Here are the final results:

1st Place – 3 victories, 46 battle points – Estevao “Gereth” (Adeptus Custodes).

The participants.

At the end of the Day I had a very rewarding experience, even if I was left with a loto f backache and tired. Landing 1st place was indeed very satisfying. I’ll leave the stage open for my club mates to share their thoughts on the comment section here and I wrap this saying farewell to you.

See you soon here! Over and out.
